Match Affix Gems to Sockets and Active Skills
Learn socket families, gem tiers, fixed-affix variants, cumulative affix levels, and a safe method for judging conditional effects in a real build.

A useful gem is first a legal gem. Inspect the exact socket variant in the equipment database, then filter the affix and gem lab by family, tier, and effect. Do not use icon color alone as proof of compatibility. Fixed-affix variants and socket variants are different planning paths: one supplies a known effect, the other supplies flexibility if you own a matching gem.
Read the aggregate level, not one gem in isolation
Add candidate gems to the lab and watch how their contributions combine into affix levels. This answers whether a new gem reaches a meaningful threshold and which slot supplies it. Compare alternatives by removing one piece at a time; otherwise several simultaneous changes make it impossible to see what actually moved the build.
Follow the effect to an equipped action
Name the active skill, weapon action, defensive event, or condition related to the affix. If no equipped action creates the condition, the displayed level is not automatically useful. The loadout simulator separates permanent panel contributions from conditional and event effects so that an attractive conditional description is not silently counted as always active.
Stop where the evidence stops
Socket legality, granted level, permanent modifiers, and documented conditions can be compared when the rule chain is closed. Final hit damage, animation timing, proc probability, or an incomplete event order must remain a test question. Mastery here means knowing both what the data proves and which claim still requires controlled gameplay, not filling the gap with a confident estimate.
